Beaumarchais wrote The Marriage of Figaro, an 18th-century French comedy that follows Figaro’s clever schemes to outwit his social superiors and secure his future. Beaumarchais, a French playwright from the Enlightenment era, penned Le Mariage de Figaro in the 1770s, and its sharp wit and social satire made it famous even before Mozart’s later opera adaptation. The play is part of a Figaro trilogy, alongside The Barber of Seville and The Guilty Mother.
